Mayor’s Summer Reading Program

In summer 2016, Good Local Markets will partner with area branches of the Dallas Public Library to offer coupons for kids participating  in the Dallas Mayor’s Summer Reading Club. Kids who reach their weekly goals will receive $5 coupons to the market, each with a recipe for a special market dish from several of our special farmers. Look for coupons at the Lochwood Library, White Rock Hills Library, and the Skillman Southwest Library. All coupons can be exchanged for a $5 Market Token to be used on healthy delicious foods from the market!

POP Club

Also in summer 2016, Good Local Markets will partner with the Power of Produce Club program to bring incentives and activities to kids at the market. Look for special cooking demos with kids, story time, and a scavenger hunt. Stay tuned for details!

White Rock Local Garden

Come garden with us! White Rock Local Garden is a collaborative effort with Texas Worm Ranch and Good Local Markets. Growing nutrient rich foods for restaurants,  to donate and to sell at market, the garden offers a venue for classes, community events, while continuing the mission of Good Local Markets.

Summer Workshops 2016

Each season Good Local Markets hosts a series of dynamic workshops that bring cooking, gardening and home “making” skills to our community. Our 2016 Urban Homesteading Summer Series begins June 25th with Jamming and Canning, and Continues until August 9 with a class on candle making. See below for details! Classes are heal at the White Rock United Methodist Church’s The Mix Co-working Group, and at  Makers Connect (10242 East Northwest Highway).

June 25, 3pm – 5pm 
Instructor: Judy Cortinas from Yims Pickles
Jamming and Canning Part 1 – Make batches of jam and preserves from start to finish using seasonal peaches and berries from the market. You’ll make two kinds of preserves using hot bath techniques —and take home a jar of each!

July 9, 3pm – 5pm
Jamming and Canning Part 2 – Pickles, Cucumbers and More! Save some of the summer harvest and enjoy fresh, crunchy pickles all year ‘round! Judy from Yims Pickles will instruct on home canning methods for pickling summer veggies, and you will take home jars of your own pickled creations.

July 10, 3pm – 5pm   
Join us at Makers Connect for an afternoon of mixology and kitchen witchery that results in those awesome fizzy bath bombs that are, well, the bomb!  We’ll mix all the dry ingredients, and then have more fun blending oils.  The resulting custom fragrance blends is what will set your fizzie creations apart. Tomato Salsa and Salad with Patricia Lepe from Merlin’s Baking and Catering. July brings us a bounty of tomatoes –Patricia from Merlin’s Baking and Catering will teach you how to make refreshing salsas and fresh tomato salads using creative ingredients from the market. Take home recipes and creations from class. At the Mix, White Rock United Methodist Church.

July 30 and August 6, 3pm – 5pm
Saturday, July 30, 3pm-5pm: Woven Wall Hanging Part 1, and August 6 – Part 2.  In this two part class, begin your weaving and learn the basic stitch and tips and tricks with Ronda Van Dyk from Shabby Sheep – Explore your inner Flower Child! Using a small recycled cardboard loom, some wool, wood and a needle and try your hand at one of the centuries old craft traditions that’s both practical and beautiful as well as soothing to the soul. In your first session you’ll work on your individual woven piece, choosing colorful yarns that speak to you, practicing the basic stitch on your pre-warped loom. Second session you’ll learn a few more techniques to add some texture and once your weaving is complete add a wooden dowel, some fringe and you have yourself a beautiful mini retro wall hanging! In Part 2 of the Woven Wall Hangings class, students will finish up and get their creations ready to hang!       $60 for two parts**Students must sign up for both Part 1 and 2 of this class.

August 7, 3pm – 5pm   
Instructor: Shelley Travell from Dylan Candles.  Come in from the sweltering heat of summer to pour some cool candles with our own Good Local vendor, Shelley Travell of Dylan Candles. Sure, you “could” do this outside on the hood of your car, but wouldn’t it be more fun to learn the tricks and tips from an expert?  And bring a friend!
